Calendula is a beautiful, sunny yellow or orange flower that has been used for centuries to heal wounds, relieve inflammation, increase beneficial immune responses, support the liver and digestive system, and even protect the skin from radiation damage. It’s such a gentle & soothing herb that can be taken both internally and externally.
The leaves and petals serve as food and are typically added to soups, broths, salads, and other foods for added nourishment, while the petals and the entire base of the flower serves as the best form of medicine. When used on the skin, it’s used in lotions, salves, balms, and oils.
OVERVIEW
Calendula will seal the permeations known as "leaky gut" while also acting as a mild liver cleanser and excellent lymphatic herb. The liver and lymph usually get overwhelmed as a side effect of food allergies, so those struggling with food sensitivities also see benefit from this herb.
Calendula acts as a wound healer internally, addressing cysts and other problems such as candida overgrowth, especially within the digestive tract.
It can serve the respiratory system by supporting mucus balance and helping to maintain happy, easy breathing.
It improves elasticity and skin hydration, and when applied regularly it helps skin stay soft and healthy.
It is a great anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial and wound-healing herb that encourages the body to clean, stitch and repair broken skin. It can help with: scars, rashes, skin fungus, herpes blisters, burns, boils, measles, varicose veins, diaper rash, and irritated eyes.
Generally an immune tonic, strengthening the immune system’s response to infection.
It holds anti-cancer properties; has been shown to be effective against the cells of colon cancer, leukemia, and melanoma.
It helps to stimulate, regulate, and normalize menstruation in women & helps relieve menstrual cramps.
It is an excellent ally in postpartum for both women and babies, helping with diaper rash, mastitis, and healing post-birth.
Calendula acts to mobilize white blood cells, stimulate lymphatic drainage, decrease inflammation of the lymph nodes, and generally support lymphatic circulation. - Paul Bergner, Medical Herbalism: Clinical Articles and Case Studies
