Chamomile is one of the most gentle yet powerful and versatile herbs out there in my opinion. It’s often one of the first forms of plant medicine people try, especially being that it’s safe for babies along with older children & adults, and it was personally my first as well! I suffered for 6 months straight with unexplained chronic nausea, and the DAY I started myself on a chamomile extract, my nausea dissipated and never returned. This is actually what sparked my desire to learn more about herbal medicine, leading me in to the lifelong journey of becoming an herbalist.

The latin name of this flower, Matricaria, means mother or womb. Some say this is because it offers benefits for mothers, while others say sipping chamomile tea is like being soothed by a nurturing mother. Germans use the phrase Alles Zutraut meaning “capable of anything” to describe Chamomile.

OVERVIEW

Chamomile is classified as a “demulcent’, meaning that it protects and soothes irritated or inflamed internal tissue. It speeds the healing of mucous membranes in the stomach and colon, protects against ulcers, and speeds up healing in the gut. It’s especially beneficial for the repair of stomach lining in cases of “leaky gut”.

It inhibits Candida overgrowth, and helps to restore gut flora; when taken with Acidophilus (a probiotic strain), it increases the colon's ability to heal after a Candida overgrowth. It helps shuttle toxins out of the body when harmful bacteria dies off.

It’s a wonderful antispasmodic, meaning it helps relieve muscle pain, spasms, and cramping, and works well for menstrual cramps.

As a nervine, it’s calming effects on the nervous system helps reduce feelings of stress and anxiety and relieves insomnia. It also helps alleviate those “nervous tummy” feelings.

It relieves colic, gas, reflux, and digestive discomfort in babies.

It helps settle hyperactivity in children.

It relieves inflamed sinuses & helps treat sinus infections and fights bacteria that causes colds or respiratory infections.

Secondary to it’s anti-inflammatory properties, Chamomile helps to soothe headaches, particularly tension headaches.

When applied to the skin, it promotes healing of wounds, treats burns, relieves eczema, destroys pathogenic bacteria, promotes youthful healthy skin, helps with dermatitis, mouth ulcers and wounds
