Lavender is one of my favorite herbs ever! It is commonly only really thought of for its aromatherapy due to its intoxicating floral aroma, but it offers so much more benefit both inside and outside the body.

Fun fact: Lavender was used as an after-bath perfume by the Romans, who gave the herb its name from the Latin lavare, to wash.

Lavender also has some biblical roots; This verse is my personal favorite: “Then took Mary a pound of ointment of spikenard [Lavender], very costly, and anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped his feet with her hair; and the house was filled with the odour of the ointment.” (Gospel of John, 12:3)

OVERVIEW

For skincare, Lavender’s antiseptic properties make it beneficial as an insect repellent and used to treat bug bites. It’s also useful for acne, psoriasis , eczema, boils and wounds. It helps heal the skin after a burn, prevents infection and promotes healing.

Lavender is such a soothing, comforting and calming herb. It’s said to inhibit sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system functions, which is useful for those with nervous system disorders. It helps to relieve mental & physical symptoms of stress such as pain, tension, irritability, and spasms or restlessness.

It can help relieve depression and anxiety and elevate mood.

For women and mothers, it’s great for relieving menstrual discomfort & PMS, and when used during labor can lessen anxiety, pain, and create a calming and joyous atmosphere for the baby to be born into.

Lavender shows anti-fungal activity, especially against Candida albicans or Candida overgrowth in the gut. This is important because fungi are becoming increasingly resistant to anti-fungal drugs as a result of overprescribing.

It’s extremely useful in cases of headaches and migraines.

It acts as a digestive aid and helps to relax the smooth muscles of the digestive tract and soothe after-meal cramps in the stomach and intestines.

It’s antibacterial properties help to fight bacterial infections

Placing a small handful of dried lavender in a mesh bag & placing it under your pillow or on your nightstand will promote a more restful sleep that will leave you feeling refreshed the next day.
