Marshmallow has a long history of use, going back at least 2,000+ years. Before the marshmallows we grew up enjoying at bonfires turned into pure sugar with no health benefits, they were actually made from THIS plant! Eating a homemade marshmallow, made the way that was originally intended, will make you never want to even look at the other ones again.
Although the flowers and leaves can be used, only the root is used in our formulas.
The latin name Althea derives from a Greek word meaning "to heal", and Atho in Greek meaning “to cure”. This herb was very treasured in ancient times; the Old Testament book of Job mentions it being eaten in times of famine.
OVERVIEW
Marshmallow helps create a relaxed healing environment in the body. It is nutritive, reparative and building, but it also helps the body rid itself of toxins and debris.
Traditionally used in cases of: dry cough, sore throat, inflammation of the respiratory, urinary and gastrointestinal tracts, acid reflux, rheumatic pain, dryness of the joints, kidney stones and other gravel, constipation or diarrhea, wounds and burns, and general irritations of the skin and mucosa.
Marshmallow is VERY mucilaginous. Mucilage is slightly gelatin-like and a little gooey, and it’s what makes this herb so soothing for the body, and what helps cool down the systems. To get the most out of this therapeutic benefit, it’s best to infuse marshmallow root in cold water overnight, then strain and drink the next day.
It coats the throat and GI tract and establishes a protective barrier, ultimately helping to restore the integrity of the gut lining. It’s ideal for acid reflux and many other digestive complaints and discomforts.
In cases of respiratory illness, It can help support the mucous membranes to heal, to produce proper mucous flow, and to decrease congestion. It’s very lubricating for the lungs, and is used to relieve dry coughs accompanied by a dry, sore, scratchy throat, and helps treat chronic bronchitis and pneumonia. It’s truly great for any type of respiratory complaint.
As a baby-safe galactagogue (an herb that increases milk production), Marshmallow has been appreciated by nursing moms, and women through the ages have used it to relieve the dryness and heat of menopause.
It has been valued as a complimentary herb for some of the side effects of chemotherapy and radiation treatment, and supports patients going through chemotherapy by nourishing them and helping them handle the treatment more easily.
It’s been shown to stimulate and modulate the immune system, and research has shown it to have some antimicrobial activity.
Mouth ulcers, sore throats, peptic ulcers, and inflamed intestines all get relief from marshmallow.
It can be used externally to soothe inflammatory skin conditions such as ulcers, sores, rashes, skin irritations, bites, cuts, scrapes and burns. A simple wash of Marshmallow may be applied to eczema or psoriasis to provide its soothing relief, and it’s a very beneficial ingredient to have in skincare or body balms.
