OVERVIEW

Skullcap is one of those herbs you want around if you experience stress, worry, overstimulation, and general unease. It is widely valued restorative tonic for the nervous system and has been widely used for more than 200 years in many different cultures. The name skullcap refers to the flower's resemblance to helmets worn by European soldiers.

HOW IT WORKS WITH THE BODY

A widely valued restorative tonic for the nervous system, Skullcap is an ally for stress affecting the body and mind. It specifically tends to anxiety and raw or frayed nerves rooted in exhaustion, with symptoms like muscle spasms, tremors, and tension headaches.

It has a way of bringing us out of our worried minds and back in to our breath and body, and could be a great long-term tonic for those who feel like they’re burning the candle at both ends, or someone who feels they spend more time worrying than they do enjoying the present moment.

Skullcap is often best for those with signs of heat and excitation. This can manifest in different ways but some common characteristics include people who are easily overheated, who are more irritable in hot weather, tend to have “type A” personalities, a red tongue (possible yellow coating) and a fast or intermittent pulse. If this sounds like you, you would be great friends with this herb!

Skullcap is useful for chronic and acute pains of many kinds, especially when the pain is associated with emotion, and is also specific for acute drug and alcohol withdrawal, and fortifies long-term recovery.

It helps with muscle twitches and involuntary spasms, and is wonderful for TMJ, leg cramping and restless legs.

As a relaxing nervine, skullcap herb is commonly used to relax the mind and promote sleep.

Studies show that skullcap has significant antioxidant effects, and may help protect against neurological disorders, such as Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease.

It’s important to note that the best therapeutic benefits of skullcap are evident when it’s used consistently over a long period of time.
