More about the herbs featured in this formula…
Tulsi (Holy Basil) - An ancient (over 3000 years) revered plant in Ayurvedic medicine. This sacred herb is referred to as “the elixir of life”. It is a powerful Adaptogen that helps the body deal with the physiology of stress, relieves mental fog, lifts mood, calms the heart and relieves palpitations, supports digestion, fights infection, and is my personal favorite herb for anxiety, panic, and ADHD symptoms. It tends to both the sympathetic and parasympathetic sides of the autonomic nervous system by first acting as a stimulant and then a relaxant— meaning It will stimulate the brain and clear mental fog, while also relaxing the nervous system, giving it time to restore and re-balance.
Oat Tops - One of the safest and most versatile herbs for restoring healthy nervous system function and general vitality. It is considered a nourishing and adaptogenic trophorestorative for the NS; This is the most important contribution herbal medicine can make in treating stress & anxiety, and in strengthening & “feeding” the nervous system. In cases of nervous debility, they can strengthen and restore the tissues directly. It serves as a valuable remedy for acute and chronic periods of stress, insomnia, depression, anxiety, ADD and ADHD, along with tending to a nervous system that has been in chronic fight-or-flight (survival mode), or a state of dysregulation for too long.
Lemon Balm - A relaxing nervine; an herb that relaxes, soothes, and supports the nervous system. Lemon balm is one of the best for relieving anxiety-induced digestive discomfort and physical pain (headaches, cramping, tightness, and tremors). It is also great for cases of insomnia and restlessness. It’s powerful antiviral properties help fight viruses such as EBV (Epstein-Barr Virus) and Long Covid that can be a chronically active underlying antagonist on the nervous system. The nuerotoxins these viruses create inflame the vagus nerve and severely impact NS function, so it’s important to address them.
Skullcap - A widely valued herb that restores, tones, and supports the nervous system; It has a way of bringing us out of our worried minds and back in to our breath and body, and could be a great long-term tonic for those who feel like they’re burning the candle at both ends, or someone who feels they spend more time worrying than they do enjoying the present moment. It also works great in situations of sudden anxiety and can calm symptoms such as an unsettled heartbeat, spasms/tremors, and overstimulation.
Lavender - Aside from it’s pleasant aroma, Lavender is an amazing nueroprotective herb; It interacts with the neurotransmitter GABA to help quiet the brain and nervous system activity, reducing agitation, anger, aggression, and restlessness. It is wonderful for those experiencing stagnant depression and feel as though they are in a fog, effectively relieves pain, and its calming nature promotes natural sleep.
Chamomile - The gentle flower that packs a punch. Chamomile is widely known for its ability to calm anxiety and nurture the digestive system, especially with nausea or IBS symptoms associated with nervousness. Our digestive system actually has its own nervous system called the enteric nervous system. The gut is extremely important to address when working towards homeostasis, and Chamomile does the trick by providing much needed moisture and nourishment.
